Description:
The Broward County South Regional Library at 7300 Pines Boulevard in Pembroke Pines, Florida, is no ordinary library. It is unique in that it serves both the citizens of Broward County as well as the students of Broward Community College’s South Campus and it is further distinguished for being the first LEED certified building in Broward County, Florida.
LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, a national non-profit trade organization that promotes environmental sustainability in new construction. Having a LEED designation means that the structure’s engineers adhered to a rigorous set of environmental standards which include energy efficiency and water conservation.
As the civil and structural engineers, DeRose Design Consultants were instrumental in garnering this LEED designation as well as completing this innovative structure.
The South Regional Library is a two-story, 70,000-square-foot building, consisting of pre-cast and pre-stressed pigmented concrete Tilt Wall construction. Its design is aesthetically unique and its floor systems are specifically created to accommodate the heavy stacking loads associated with the books and periodicals of the library.
In addition to the LEED certification, the Broward County South Regional Library also received an award by the Tilt-Up Association for having used pre-cast tilt walls in its structural design.
